What's In My Bag: Kattia Solano, Hairstylist & Founder of Butterfly Studio in NYC
By Klaudia Tirico / September 22, 2015
Twelve tubes of lipstick? Poetry scribbled on Sephora receipts? Keys to a Harley? You can tell a lot about a person by the contents of her bag. In our What’s in My Bag series, we ask beauty and style insiders to spill the contents of their purses in hopes of finding a few gems.
The Subject
Kattia Solano’s career began as a professional hairstylist in New York City. Throughout 20 years, Solano created for editorials in magazines like Vogue, Allure and Elle, as well as runway shows like Oscar de la Renta and Carolina Herrera. She was even hired by L’Oreal to develop Shu Uemura’s Art of Hair collection! In 2001, she opened Butterfly Studio in NYC, where woman trusted her for her expertise in hair textures and trends. Here’s what this hairstylist mom stashes in her edgy Tom Ford bag everyday.
The Bag
“I’m obsessed with my Tom Ford Alix Shoulder Bag in black [1]. It's an incredible bag that’s stylish yet has so much versatility. You can use it as a shoulder bag or fold it into a clutch for the night. It’s also helpful that it has a separate bag in the inside to hold my phone and lip gloss.”
What’s Inside
“I have many beauty products that I keep in my bag at all times. First, my eyelash curler by Kevin Aucoin [2] and two mascaras by Tom Ford – the Ultra Length [3] and Extreme Mascara. I like to alternate between the two and sometimes layer them depending on where I’m going. I also always keep my Nars Dual Intensity Blush [4] in my bag because it's a cream powder applied dry and if you add a little water it turn to a creamy satin. Even though it lasts all day, I like to have it around for quick touchups on the go! It also comes with a highlighter. My favorite color is called Frenzy.
Next, of course I have a variety of lipgloss in all different shades of neutral, pink or coral. I always carry my classic red Rouge Volupté lipstick by Yves Saint Laurent [5] because it’s perfect to dress up any look. I also love Jane Iredale’s Just Kissed Lip and Cheek Stain in Forever Peach [6] for days I don’t want to wear a lot of makeup and have a more natural look. Lastly, a travel-sized Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray [7] is a must for myself, or if I have to touch up anyone on the road.
Aquaphor [8] because it's easy to carry and my go-to in many situations. It protects skin from dryness and soothes minor cuts and rashes. It’s safe for all skin types and can be used on the body or face. I love having a soft fragrance to keep me feel fresh all day. Bonpoint baby perfume [9] smells wonderful and it's good for all occasions.”
The Quirky and Unexpected
“I always have a variety of ponytail holders [10] in all sizes and colors – slightly obsessed. And now that I have a daughter, I'm addicted to Boogie Wipes [11]. They are soft and made with saline so you can use them to blow your nose, wipe your face, clean your hands, etc.”
