NYFW Exclusive: How the Pamella Roland Spring 2015 Look Was Born Klaudia Tirico
Days and weeks before editors pile high backstage to get a first glimpse of a designer's collection, an intimate group gathers at the designer's showroom to test how the beauty look works with the collection. This meeting, called a model test, includes the designer, key makeup artist, key hairstylist, a model and a stylist. And this season, Beauty Blitz. Here's an intimate look at how the Pamella Roland spring 2015 look was born.

The Makeup Klaudia Tirico
Pamella Roland tapped Laura Mercier’s Global Brand Ambassador Matin Maulawizada to lead the makeup for her show. When Matin and his team arrived, the first thing they did was lay out a ton of Laura Mercier products on the table for easy access. After all, Matin still didn’t know what the final look was going to be, let alone what products he was going to use. -
The Focus Klaudia Tirico
For the look, Maulawizada decided to focus on the eyes and cheeks but with a unique twist. “They kind of blend into each other with the same kind of pinky brown that goes from the eyes to the cheeks,” he said. -
Lip Color Klaudia Tirico
“I might do a red lip, but even if I do, [the eye and cheeks] are still the focus of the look,” he added. -
The Hair Klaudia Tirico
Ted Gibson was the show’s hair lead, and he, too, still didn’t have an idea of the final look. “We’re playing around. Don’t know what’s going on yet,” he told me as he started pinning the hair up. “We’re definitely using a headband; not sure if the hair is up or down yet.” -
DIY Accessories Klaudia Tirico
The hair accessory was a three-stranded rope band that the team dyed a ballet pink hue. “It goes with all the clothes,” Gibson added. The final shade was still being finalized. -
Change of Plans Klaudia Tirico
The hair made a quick turn, going from an updo with a headband to half-wet, half-textured wave with a middle part. The position of the accessory was to be determined. -
All in the Placement Klaudia Tirico
Gibson toyed with a variety of different placements for the accessory. He decided to attach the three-stranded band at the nape of the neck. -
Geisha-esque Klaudia Tirico
Meanwhile, Maulawizada’s makeup was coming along beautifully. Since Roland’s collection was Japanese-inspired, he opted for glowy skin that was “a touch paler than the body.” Like a Geisha girl, but not as literal. -
Face Makeup as Eye Shadow Klaudia Tirico
He also used a variety of Laura Mercier bronzers and blush to amp up the temple area with color. “The eyes are defined with shadow, not liner,” he added. -
Final Decisions Klaudia Tirico
After creating the eye look, Maulawizada decided to skip the red lipstick and opt for a more natural pout. -
New Wave Klaudia Tirico
Gibson used a large barrel iron to create waves starting from the nape of the neck. Then, he used his fingers to “backcomb” the hair for texture. As for the accessory, you’ll have to read on to see if they used it on the day of the show or not. -
Coloring the Face Chart Klaudia Tirico
Last but not least, Maulawizada painted the face chart to have something to show his team on the day of the show. -
Day of Show: Backstage Klaudia Tirico
A lot happened in the week between the hair and makeup test and the actual runway show. Both the makeup and hair looks had drastically changed! “The look is lot more pink,” said Maulawizada. “After you left, we decided that the brown looked too brown, especially with the lighter dresses. So we went from that to the pink. We also added mascara.”Over in hair, the look was completely different, with a sleek ponytail wrapped in the pink rope accessory. Gibson said, “[Roland] just felt like it was a little stronger than she wanted. I loved it, but I’m here to make sure she’s happy. She just really wanted it a little different. And that happened at 10:30 last night.”Photo by: Klaudia Tirico -
