All the Details on Lupita Nyong’o’s Purple Hair at the Met Ball

Yes, between the beaded and feathered Prada fishnet dress, violet eye makeup and Cartier headband, there was a lot going on with Lupita Nyong’o’s look at the Met Gala last night. But we have to give her credit for being brave enough to make a statement from head to toe — literally. The crowning glory on top of the Oscar winner’s look-at-me ensemble was her newly purple hair, styled by Ted Gibson.
“This woman is so inspiring to me!” Gibson enthused. “After seeing her Prada dress and Cartier headpiece I knew I had to make her hair something special. I love this French roll because it has a regal feel to it. To make the look modern I colored her hair in a purple hue to complement the green feathers and stones in the dress.”
The purple came from Manic Panic in Purple Haze, which was applied generously on the extensions Gibson used to create Lupita’s hairstyle and left to process for 30 minutes. To style the French roll, Gibson used his line’s Ultimate Shine products on the actress’ hair and connected the extensions using gel and hairspray. He finished off the look with holding spray to keep everything in place.
What we love most about this look is that it shows even dark haired ladies can experiment with not-found-in-nature colors, and that bleach doesn’t necessarily have to be part of the equation. Gibson feels the same way: “Lupita proves that no matter your hair texture, color, or length – hair is art!”
