This New Tampon Brand Puts Others To Shame

By Klaudia Tirico / July 16, 2015

Tampons are one of those things that most women use, but don’t really talk about. I don’t know about you, but I’ve never found them to be great conversation starters. Feminine care is tricky and can lead to a deadly bacterial infection known as toxic shock syndrome (TSS). I, for one, am terrified of TSS, yet I still get pulled into reading all the horror stories about it. If you want to ruin your day, check out this Vice article about a model who lost her leg from this awful infection. We never think that it will happen to us, but it can.

For a few years, I’ve been under the impression that tampons in this day and age are not as toxic as they used to be. I was wrong. All of the big tampon manufacturers use synthetic ingredients like rayon and plastic, making bacteria growth common. And we’re supposed to put these things inside us!? Not OK. Which brings me to a new tampon brand that’s changing the game for our time of the month.

Meet LOLA, a recently launched brand of feminine care that makes tampons with 100-percent hypoallergenic cotton sans additives, chemicals, or dyes. This is a huge deal, ladies.

The Vice article I mentioned earlier quoted Dr. Philip M. Tierno, a professor of microbiology and pathology at the NYU School of Medicine, who said, “Most major tampon manufacturers make tampons with either mixes of viscose rayon and cotton, or pure viscose rayon, and in either case those tampons provide optimal physical-chemical conditions necessary to cause the production of the TSST-1 toxin if a toxigenic strain of Staphylococcus aureus is part of the normal vaginal flora in a woman. Toxic shock syndrome may result if a woman has no antibody to the toxin or low antibody. Therefore the synthetic ingredients of a tampon are a problem, whereas 100 percent cotton tampons provide the lowest risk, if any risk at all." Emphasis on the last sentence.

What boggles my mind is the fact that other tampon companies, who clearly make a ton of money, don’t use 100-percent cotton. And what’s crazier is that the FDA doesn’t require them to list their ingredients on the box. I kid you not. But LOLA lists theirs with pride, giving us some piece of mind.

LOLA’s tampons put others to shame in more ways than one. It’s actually a subscription service, which allows you to customize your own box (choose how many light, regular and super tampons you want) and have it sent to your home monthly or bi-monthly. That means never having to rush to the store to have a 16-year-old boy ring you up for tampons. Did I mention how sleek the packaging is? You can place it right on top of your toilet without embarrassment.

If this article doesn’t make you switch your go-to tampon brand out for LOLA, I don’t know what will. Get your subscription at MyLOLA.com now. Your first two boxes will only cost you $9!
