Fendi Makes Mascara Disasters Look Like Art

By Wendy Rodewald-Sulz / February 26, 2015

These days it’s not unusual to see a girl in green lipstick on the subway, or to find yourself in the next shampoo sink over from a sixty-five year old dying her hair unicorn purple at the salon. In our anything-goes beauty climate, there are very few faux pas anymore — but messy mascara is definitely one of them.

So it was jarring to see models with a thoroughly disastrous lash situation in photos from today’s Fendi show in Milan. But this look was no mistake. Rather, it was the latest creation from Peter Philips, the creative director for Dior makeup and the man who made us want to stick adhesive eyeliner strips on our lids. Backstage at the Fall/Winter 2015 show, Philips and his team used Diorshow Lash Maximizer Lash Plumping Serum to lengthen and fatten up models’ lashes, which were painted with inky black mascara that was deliberately smudged around the eyes.

Clearly any one of us would look like a crazy person should we attempt to copy this look IRL. So why would a famous makeup artist do such a thing to pretty models for a runway show? The short answer is because there are very few boundaries left to push. When a 12-year-old can go on YouTube and learn to master a six color smoky eye, what’s left for professionals to wow us with? This striking look is definitely a start.
