Edgy Beauty at Diesel Black Gold - NYFW Fall 2011

By Wendy Rodewald-Sulz / February 17, 2011

Makeup: Pat McGrath for CoverGirl

For makeup artist Pat McGrath, the Diesel look was all about "the way that girls look today." Starting with a base of "fresh" skin (courtesy of NatureLuxe Silk Foundation), Pat created a "smudgy" eye using Liquiline Blast Eyeliner in Black Fire. She also debuted the new NatureLuxe Mousse Mascara; it arrives at a drugstore near you July 2011. NatureLuxe Gloss Balm in Marble topped off the lips.

Hair: Guido for Redken

We can't confirm how many cans of Forceful 23 hairspray Guido's team used backstage, but suffice to say it was a lot. About the "too much product" look, Guido explained, "Sometimes we do textures that aren't what we'd consider 'good', just to give it an edge, to update a very simple hairstyle." Here, that involved applying Rootful 06 spray to wet hair, parting very low to one side and letting locks dry naturally, then coating with the aforementioned aerosol to "create shape in the hair" while molding with hands. Guido employed hidden braids on the underside of models' hair to take away some of the weight: "I think some hairstyles look better when the hair's finer - it's not always about the volume," he said. To add even more personality to the show's cool girl characters, Guido tucked strands into furry coats and leather jackets before models trotted the runway.
