In case you’ve been separated from all forms of digital communication for the past 24 hours — hey, it’s possible — you’re probably aware that Kim Kardashian bleached her eyebrows yesterday, and everyone is freaking out. (To top it off, she had to go and pose next to modern brow icon Cara Delevingne.) It’s no wonder we’re rattled by seeing a famous person sans brows; arches play an essential role in facial recognition and communication. In fact, a 2003 MIT study found that most people weren’t able to identify celebrities in photos where their eyebrows were Photoshopped out. Want to see for yourself? Do bleached brows run in the family? Kim’s half-sister had hers lightened for her runway appearance at Marc Jacobs’ Fall 2014 show — not that anyone was looking at her arches.

It’s not often the supermodel strays from her signature look, but she got herself into a bleached eyebrow situation on the cover of Love Magazine’s Issue Four in 2010.
