Annick Goutal will always have a special place in my heart. I first heard of the French perfume house when I was vacationing with my mom in Paris. (I had the option between a Sweet 16 party and a trip to France. Obviously I chose the latter.) All she wanted was to go to an Annick Goutal boutique and buy herself one of their iconic scents. I remember being in the shop just swooning over the luxe crystal bottles and sniffing all the beautiful fragrances. My mom and I both felt so chic.
For a while, the closest thing to being inside a Parisian Annick Goutal boutique was their beauty counter at department stores. Not anymore. The first U.S. stand-alone boutique has opened its doors on Bleecker Street in New York City this month. Customers are invited to smell, touch and feel the fragrant scents, try the personalized bottle engraving service and get one-on-one olfactive consultations.
“It is a big event for us because it was a wish of Annick for a long time to open a shop in New York,” said perfumer Isabelle Doyen.
The space comes to life by beautiful lighting, sculptural columns and a unique butterfly-moucharabieh wall (the butterfly is a symbol of the brand). “Everything in the store is from France. We took everything, put it on a plane and flew it here,” said Camille Goutal, perfumer and daughter of Annick.

In addition to a new NYC boutique, Annick Goutal is also launching an Eau de Parfum version of the gardenia-scented Un Matin D’Orage.
Goutal discovered gardenias while traveling in Japan. She told Doyen, “Oh, I discovered these wonderful bushes of gardenia and the scent was fantastic.” From there, the two perfumers took Goutal’s discovery to inspire a new fragrance. “Flowers on the gardenia bushes in the morning when the storm is coming,” said Doyen of the inspiration.
“We created the eau de toilette on this idea and then, five years later, we started working on it again for the eau de parfum. We wanted to make it more erotic, deep and mysterious,” she added.
Un Matin D’Orage Eau de Parfum is also blended with notes of Sicilian lemon, ginger, magnolia and jasmine. It is available at department stores and the new NYC boutique at 397 Bleecker Street in May.
