Whether you’re into mattes, sheers or stains, a pretty pout is all the rage for spring. Kickstart the season with the sweetest, brightest, most fabulous lip colors to rock with all the latest trends.

Our favorite way to wear tangerine (a.k.a. Pantone’s Color of the Year) is on the pout. Use a juicy orange lip to top off a crisp white ensemble à la Rick Owens, or pair the shade with graphic and pastel prints as seen on models at Jen Kao. Too bold for your taste? Try a sheer version or a coral hue for a less-striking statement.

Multi-colored floral prints are all the rage this season, especially when paired with a pink-ish purple lip color just like the one we spotted at Prabal Gurung. To get the look, use a brighter shade on the entire lip and add a darker hue just in the middle.

“If you have a big event and you want to look special then I think many trends should be tried fearlessly,” says makeup artist Stephen Sollitto. “What have you got to lose?”  This pastel pink packs serious punch when paired with mod prints like those seen at Milly.

At Dior, models sported bright, watermelon pink lips with bold-hued dresses for a deliberate clashing effect. The trick: “Make the color different enough so that people understand you were making a choice rather than trying to match the dress with wrong shade of lip,” says Stephen.

The 2012 spring runways taught us that red is a must-have shade no matter the weather. Rock a red lip with pastel or jewel-toned frocks à la Jean Paul Gaultier and YSL. For a spring-y red lip, makeup artist Molly R. Stern says, “A bright red lip is gorgeous with a rosy pink cheek. It's okay to mix and match.”

Purple lips? Really? The makeup artists we consulted insist that most lip shades - even bold ones - are pretty universal and can be worn by almost anyone. “As long as your foundation and blush are right for you, go ahead and have fun with your lipstick shade,” says Molly.
