D&C
A prefix designating that a certifiable color has been approved for use in drugs and cosmetics.
D&C Red #17
Red dye that is proven to be carcinogenic in animals.
D&C Red #33
A red colorant permitted for use in drugs and cosmetics but not in food.
D&C Yellow #11
Added to D&C Red #17 to get that peach color cloying Fragrance.
DEA (Diethanolamine)
A neutralizing agent that elevates pH.
DEA Oleth - 3 phosphate
An emulsifier that prevents separation of product and adds shine.

Deep Tissue Massage
Therapy aimed at the underlying layers of the muscle and connective tissue. Deep tissue massage uses many of the same movements and techniques as Swedish massage, but the pressure is generally more intense. It is also a more focused type of massage, as the therapist works to release chronic muscle tension.
Depilate
Removal of hair on the surface of the skin (for example, shaving).

Substances that can be injected just beneath the skin’s surface to smooth facial lines and wrinkles or add volume and definition to lips.

Dermal Papilla
Projection from the dermis that extends upward into the epidermis. The Dermal Papilla helps anchor the epidermis and dermis.
Dermatites
Any inflammation of the skin. The reason may be a bacterium, fungus, or parasite. It can also be a foreign substance like an allergen.

The lower layers of the skin, beneath the epidermis.
Desquamation
The shedding of outer layers of the skin.
Dihydroxyacetone image
DHA (Dihydroxyacetone)
Derived from sugarcane, DHA is used to artificially tan skin by reacting with amino acids in skin. DHA is the active ingredient in self-tanning or fake-tanning products, along with spray-tanning and airbrush-tanning treatments.
Diazolidinyl
Cosmetic Preservative.
Dicaprate
Emulsifier (a thickening agent that helps bind different ingredients together).
Dicaprylate
Emulsifier (a thickening agent that helps bind different ingredients together).
Dimethicone
An organic silicone used as a skin protectant and moisturizer. Well-tolerated by even the most sensitive skin, dimethicone has a filming action on the skin surface which helps slow down moisture loss and smooth fine, dry lines.
Dimethicone Copolyol
A moisturizing complex of natural silica that acts as a spreading agent for easy product application.
Dimethyl Lauramine Isostearate
Conditioning and thickening agent.
Dimethyl Stearamine
Conditioning and thickening agent.
Disodium Oleamide MEA-sulfosuccinate:
A wax-like solid surfactant (mixing agent) used as a wetting agent in bath preparations and lotions.
DMDM (Dimethylol Dimethyl)
Used with hydantoin to form a preservative. Slowly releases formaldehyde to give bactericidal properties to lotions.
Dodecatrienol
In the essential oils of many types of plants and flowers. It is present in neroli, ginger, jasmine, lavender, tea tree and lemon grass. The aroma is woody and reminiscent of fresh bark. It is used as a flavoring agent and in perfumery.
