Confessions of a Lip Balm Addict

By Margaret Fisher / August 18, 2014

I have often heard that no one actually makes it through a tube of lip balm, that they always end up lost or discarded before you can get the chance. This is certainly not the case for me.

I have finished countless tubes in my lifetime, and will never be found far from a lip product. (It's traumatic to think of an instance where I might be.) I even own jeans where the pocket has a faded mark in the shape of a tube of Chapstick.

I suppose I would classify myself as a lip balm addict. And I think that my constant applications have qualified me to talk about the best options for my fellow addicts.

The first time I felt a slight reprieve from the need to reapply all too often was when I switched to the original Burt's Bees lip balm. The peppermint oil leaves a lasting sensation that seems to repeat a mantra to your lips, "I still have lip balm on. I don't feel dry."

I spent many faithful years with Burt's Bees before discovering Vaseline Lip Therapy. I've taken to ordering them in bulk because as simple as it seems, it works. The petrolatum creates a barrier that protects your lips while giving instant relief for chapped lips. If you are looking for something that gives the same effect but is slightly less bare-bones, I'm a fan of the Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm. It has SPF 25 and a delightful lemon scent.

If you are looking to further cut down your lip balm use, perhaps you should consider buying a $50 La Mer lip balm and then using sheer will power to force yourself not to go through a container each month.

But then again I'm qualified to help make your lip balm addiction more pleasant, not to instruct you to wean yourself off it.

However my final thought is not about lip balm at all, but about gloss. A quick coat of a lip balm followed by your favorite gloss is the ultimate solution. You shouldn't feel the urge to reapply until the gloss has started to wear off, buying yourself some valuable extra time in your day!
