Alexis Wolfer, Beauty Bean Founder

Working in the world of women’s magazines, the topics of fashion and beauty made Alexis Wolfer realized how unrealistic some of these beauty ideals were and how that could bring down a reader’s self esteem. She earned her Master’s Degree from Columbia University and wrote her thesis on the negative impact some magazines can have on a woman’s body image. Alexis wanted to create a place for women to celebrate being beautiful by being healthy. This provoked her to launch The Beauty Bean, an online magazine and e-newsletter.
5:30 am
Alarm goes off and I immediately begin caffeinating and emailing (it’s amazing how many come through in the seemingly short amount of time I sleep!), before walking my dog, Zoe.
6:00 am
Head to Equinox for Lacey Stone’s spin class - my favorite way to start the week. I am acutely aware that these will be the only 45 minutes I won’t be attached to my phones (yes, plural) today. And even more aware that this makes me anxious (which is probably a problem!).
7:30 am
While it’s Makeup Free Mondays (I dutifully pass over my makeup bag stocked with Benefit Erase Paste, RMS Lip2Cheek stain in Rapture, Trish McEvoy Classic Eye Pencil and Chanel Inimitable Mascara) I do follow the rest of my beautifying routine: Skinceuticals Phloretin CF (for antioxidant protection), SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Gel and Arganica Oil (which gives my skin a gorgeous glow without clogging my pores!). I do my hair myself (which is only possible because of the brilliant cut by Michael Angelo at Wonderland Beauty Parlor (http://www.wonderlandbeautyparlor.com/)) and put on a hot pink Phillip Lim dress with the hope that it will make me look less washed out while makeup-free in HD.
8:45 am
Post my makeup-free picture to my Twitter and The Beauty Bean’s Facebook page before running by Doma to pick up oatmeal and yogurt - my go-to breakfast.
9:15 am
Meet CBS production team at Laughing Sage Wellness to film a segment on businesses participating in Makeup Free Mondays. Although I’ve become comfortable with Makeup Free Mondays in the "real world," HD is a bit scarier. Fingers crossed.
10:45 am
Quick break. Check Twitter (which I do obsessively!) and am inspired by the number of people sending us their Makeup Free Mondays pictures and using the hash-tag #MakeupFreeMondays.
11:30 am
Pow-wow with RedBranch PR team before calling in an update to my friend and CAA agent, Becky Sendrow.
12:00 pm
Head to the Soho House, with laptop in tow, to attempt to tackle the 1000+ emails in my inbox, reply to PR pitches, check in with my contributing editors and check out the feature on The Beauty Bean on AOL.com’s homepage.
2:00 pm
Chat with Beth Schoenfeldt of Collective-e about business strategy, call Dress for Success to discuss the charitable aspects of Makeup Free Mondays and update The Beauty Bean’s Facebook page, all while chomping on a green apple with raw almond butter.
3:30 pm
Exhausted. Head to the bathroom and realize how much I miss my Chanel Inimitable Mascara and RMS Living Luminizer - my tricks for looking awake! Settle instead for a quick lash curl, coffee (which I wish I could just inject directly into my veins), and reading more inspiring emails from women and men around the world who feel empowered by Makeup Free Mondays. Makes the exhaustion well worth it!
5:30 pm
Run home to walk Zoe, get together a bag of beauty products one of our editors is picking up and freshen up. There is something about a new swipe of Dove deodorant and a spritz of Jo Malone perfume (especially the new English Pear and Freesia one launching this fall) that makes me feel more put together.
6:15 pm
Walk by Jack’s Coffee and struggle not to run in for a dirty chai latte (the best in town!) - although I know caffeine after 4pm is not a good idea. Instead, stop by Lifethyme Natural Market for a large green juice and some brown rice and roasted sweet potatoes from their hot bar.
7:00 pm
Take a cab to Vayner Media to meet with a potential web-master for The Beauty Bean and talk about some site updates.
8:15 pm
Head home to edit the articles that have come in today, send out story ideas to contributors and write. It’s amazing that it’s not until 14 hours into my day that I get to my "real job."
10:00 pm
Have a second date. Pretty sure it will be the last. And it’s not because it’s Makeup Free.
11:30 pm
Wash my face with Arcona’s Toner Tea Bar, dab on more Arganica Oil and swipe Aquaphor around my eyes and on my cuticles before heading to bed for some much-needed beauty sleep.
