Bruce Grayson, Makeup Artist

Beauty Blitz got to follow Academy Awards makeup department head Bruce Grayson as he prepared for the live telecast on March 7. Check out his ultra-busy schedule and find out how he keeps all those celebrities looking impossibly gorgeous in front of the cameras.
6:40 am
My alarm goes off, but since I set my clock ahead 20 minutes, I snooze - after all tonight is the Oscars and I need my beauty sleep.
7:00 am
Again, my alarm goes off. I roll over and am face to face with my 21-year-old pug, Klause, and gorgeous wife. Wow, her skin looks amazing - she must have gotten her hands on my Olay Professional Pro-X Intensive Firming Treatment kit.
7:15 am
I meditate for 15 minutes to clear my head. "Got to stay in the moment" is my mantra. I take a quick shower... this is the time when I admit to being a metrosexual and being totally obsessed with skincare products. I notice that my eyes are puffy and use the Olay Regenerist Anti-Aging Eye Roller. It immediately looks as if I've slept 8 hours - even though I haven't!
8:00 am
I head over to The Coffee Bean on Sunset, which happens to have the best people watching in Hollywood! Hipsters, artists, weirdoes and celebs, all under one roof. I sip my Café Americano, 3 shots of espresso and a little hot water, and munch on a granola bar. Life is good! Seriously, I live for my morning coffee. I go to bed thinking about how amazing my morning Americano is going to taste.
8:30 am
I check my blackberry and review all the last minute Oscar-related emails from producers, production staff, talent coordinators, publicists, hairstylists and make up artists that I am working with. It's a massive amount of coordinating, especially since I'm overseeing 22 makeup artists.
9:45 am
Call time at The Kodak Theater is 11:00 am, but since security is mega tight and traffic can be a disaster on Hollywood Blvd., I head on over. Tuxedo's in the car and makeup is already at the theater. Of course I check my glove compartment where I have stashed a set of staples, like Nars glosses, Laura Mercier concealers, MAC powder. I love makeup!
10:30 am
Inside The Kodak, I'm greeted in the makeup room by head hairstylist Anthony Wilson. We make last minute room arrangements so that the 18 hair dressers and 22 makeup artists can work on the 65 dancers that we have to have camera ready before we go live with the Oscar broadcast at 5:00 pm.
10:30 am
Catch a sneak peak of the last show rehearsal in progress - looks great!
10:45 am
Meet with Stage Manager Rita Cossette to make last-minute adjustments to our show schedule. Talk about placement of makeup artists during the show, including stage left, stage right, green room. Also go over which artists will work on talent in their dressing rooms.
11:30 am
Drama - three of the artists get red flagged at security. I go to the backstage entrance and find the guards going though the artists' bags and questioning why they have tweezers and a vibrating mascara. These boys obviously don't know the importance of gorgeous eyebrows and lashes! And since they confiscate their tools, I need to deal.
11:45 am
I find the agent in charge of security and we go to the backstage entrance to get the equipment. They release the goods. As we leave I notice that one of the guard's brows look suspiciously perfect!
12:00 pm
Time for the makeup demo - my team gathers as I show them how to apply some hot new products, like the CoverGirl Smoky Shadowblast - wow, the dual shadow stick really makes smoky eyes a breeze. I hand out backstage assignments. I better eat now. I wolf down a salad and grab a power bar for later.
1:00 pm
LET THE GAMES BEGIN! The dancers and trophy girls start to trickle in for hair and makeup and the room is in full swing - lashes are being tossed and dryers humming. There is nothing like the energy generated when 22 talented makeup artists and 18 amazing hairdressers get together for one big glamour party. I love my job!
3:45 pm
As I watch the first celebrities walk the very long red carpet on the backstage TV monitor, I keep a look out for potential emergency touch ups like running mascara, or false lashes that have come unglued.
4:30 pm
I find a dressing room to change. Three other people had the same idea and are using the room. It's all very glamorous... not! As I adjust my cufflinks, I hear over a walkie talkie that we have 15 minutes until we're live. I race by the makeup room to make sure everything is running smoothly and wish everyone a good show.
4:55 pm
A Production Assistant runs up to tell me that the green room makeup area is slammed with celebrities. I take a deep breath.
5:00 pm
It's show time!
